This information is not comprehensive but should provide a general guideline for determining what your Hitch Class is. Make sure you know exactly which trailer hitch your vehicle has to ensure safety when using an EZ Carrier.
Trailer hitch class is determined by the amount of weight a vehicle is capable of towing and is divided in to five classes. Click here to learn more about tongue weight. Below is a quick reference guide.
Class I: Gross trailer weight up to 2000 lbs. Tongue weight up to 200 lbs.
Class II: Gross trailer weight up to 3500 lbs. Tongue weight up to 350 lbs.
Class III: Gross trailer weight up to 5000 lbs. Tongue weight up to 500 lbs.
Class IV: Gross trailer weight up to 12000 lbs. Tongue weight up to 1200 lbs.
Class V: Gross trailer weight up to 13000 lbs. Tongue weight up to 1300 lbs.
*please note: "up to" is a generalization of each class. Check the specifications of your trailer hitch to determine its actual capabilities.
Class I and Class II: Class I and Class II trailer hitches most often have a 1-1/4" opening (pictured above right) and are often confused. The major difference between these two trailer hitch classes is their towing capacity and tongue weight. We do not sell our products for Class I trailer hitches out of concern for the safety of our customers, their vehicles, and others.
Class III and above: Class III trailer hitches most often have a 2" opening (pictured above left).
Exceptions: Recently we have been made aware of a class 2.5 which is a Class II trailer hitch with a 2" opening. In this case, ordering our Class III EZ Carriers would be appropriate.
Class IV, and V trailer hitches can have a 2.5" opening. In this case, please let us know at the time of your order and we can build a custom adapter for this hitch size.
It is always best to measure your trailer hitch opening before placing an order.
